Parents name their most loved and most hated children’s TV shows

Most loved and most hated children's TV shows

Believe it or not, I really look forward to watching children’s TV shows with Roma – but that’s because I intend to inflict retro 90s cartoons on her.

Biker Mice from Mars, X-Men, Street Sharks, Batman, Hey Arnold, Rude Dog, Rugrats, Courage the Cowardly Dog – all that good stuff; none of this 3D CGI nonsense.

As you can tell, I look back on my childhood TV viewing habits with great fondness.

However, with nostalgia in mind testing the limits of parents’ patience, online networking platform Childcare.co.uk has surveyed 2,000 UK parents to find out which children’s TV shows they enjoy watching with their kids the most, versus the programmes that make their blood boil.

The one who lives in a pineapple under the sea, it was SpongeBob Squarepants that came top of the pile for the beloved programmes, securing a 48 per cent vote.  Seemingly, parents felt more passionate about what they hate, as Peppa Pig was chosen by 57 per cent. The hatred of Peppa was down to the character’s attitude, according to 46 per cent.

Interestingly, both SpongeBob and Peppa Pig are both properties of Viacom, which owns Nickelodeon.

In fairness, I’d happily watch most of the top ten faves – I watched the majority of them in my own youth.

Meanwhile, I don’t know what half of the loathed shows are, and probably for good reason – Yo Gabba Gabba? Calilou?

Apparently I’m on the right wavelength as most respondents as 62 per cent said that shows were better when they were younger, and 18 per cent admitted they would watch at least one children’s TV show “if it was socially acceptable”.

My response to the latter is, to hell with socially acceptable – you get that bowl of Lucky Charms out and you catch up with Superted if that’s what you fancy doing.

Parents’ top ten most loved children’s TV shows are:

(1)   SpongeBob SquarePants – 48 per cent

(2)   Horrible Histories – 36 per cent

(3)   Scooby Doo – 21 per cent

(4)   Adventure Time – 20 per cent

(5)   Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – 18 per cent

(6)   Tom & Jerry – 17 per cent

(7)   Bob the Builder – 15 per cent

(8)   Fairly Odd Parents – 15 per cent

(9)   Power Rangers – 13 per cent

(10) Arthur – 12 per cent

Parents’ top ten most hated children’s TV shows are:

(1)   Peppa Pig – 57 per cent

(2)   Max and Ruby – 38 per cent

(3)   Dora the Explorer – 32 per cent

(4)   Barney and Friends – 30 per cent

(5)   Yo Gabba Gabba – 27 per cent

(6)   Caillou – 25 per cent

(7)   Sam and Cat – 22 per cent

(8)   Lazy Town – 18 per cent

(9)   In the Night Garden – 14 per cent

(10) Wonder Pets – 11 per cent

“The subject of which children’s programmes parents love and hate is something we’ve seen discussed a lot, so we thought we’d look into it properly. Some of the results are quite surprising, personally I quite like Dora!” said Richard Conway, CEO and founder of Childcare.co.uk.

“The survey stirred up quite a lot of nostalgia for us and the people who took part. As most parents will know finding a television programme that your children like can be hard enough, let alone trying to find one you don’t find too irritating!”
